Johnson & Johnson's Synergy is a lens that combines a diffractive intraocular lens and an extended depth of focus intraocular lens.

Synergy (Johnson & Johnson), day, building, pupil 3.0 mm

With Johnson & Johnson's Synergy lens, distant buildings appear slightly hazy, as if covered in fog, compared with a monofocal IOL. This is a phenomenon typically seen with diffractive multifocal IOLs.

Synergy (Johnson & Johnson), nighttime, building, pupil 3.8 mm, glare

With Johnson & Johnson's Synergy lens, halos and glare around bright lights at night appear more pronounced than with a monofocal IOL. This is a phenomenon typically seen with diffractive multifocal IOLs. The larger the pupil, the more pronounced it appears.

Synergy (Johnson & Johnson), image of the eye chart at each distance, pupil 3.0 mm

This is a video showing how the target appears at each distance with Johnson & Johnson's Synergy lens.
At 6 meters it appears slightly blurred, as if in a fog, compared with a monofocal IOL.
As the target gets closer, it gradually blurs, then is seen clearly from about 65 cm to 35 cm, and then blurs again.

Synergy (Johnson & Johnson), night road, pupil 3.8 mm, glare

This is a video of an actual nighttime road recording taken with a portable model eye.
With Johnson & Johnson's Synergy lens, halos are seen around bright lights (traffic lights, vehicle headlights, taillights) compared with a monofocal IOL.
This is a phenomenon typically seen with diffractive multifocal IOLs.
It appears more prominent when the pupil is large.

  • The specifications above are based on data provided by the IOL manufacturer or its distributor.
  • An IOL with a higher refractive index is thinner at the same dioptric power.
  • Abbe number: measured for optics exposed to air; a higher value means less chromatic aberration.
